Taking a Stand: Woman Suffrage and Protest at the White House K-8

Post-Field Trip Activity

Students will create their own suffrage poster based on the information they learned during the electronic field trip.

30 Minutes

Students will use their knowledge from the electronic field trip and pre-visit lesson to create a suffrage poster.

  • Poster paper
  • Markers/crayons/colored
  1. Starter/Hook: On the board, write “How did suffragists tell people they wanted the right to vote?” to initiate a discussion.  Have students list ways.
  1. Direct Instruction:
    1. Give each student poster paper and markers. Have them created the poster they would have brought with them to march in front of the White House during the Suffrage Movement. They should include reason why women should be allowed to vote on their poster or why a particular suffragist supported the movement.
    2. Use the NWHM’s “Crusade for the Vote” for historic examples: http://www.crusadeforthevote.org/nwp-militant/
