Getting into the Games: Women and the Olympics

Women have competed in the Olympic games since the second modern games in 1900. Over 2500 American women have competed, and they have brought home over 850 Olympic medals. In the 1900 Olympic games, women were only allowed to participate in 4 of the 20 Olympic sports. Today, only three Olympic sports are not integrated: Nordic Combined (men only; to be integrated in 2022), Synchronized Swimming (women only), and Rhythmic Gymnastics (women only). The Museum has created four unique pieces of content exploring women’s involvement in the Olympic Games including an exhibit, article, timeline, and infographics.
