Dr. William E. (Bill) White is an American historian, civics educator, and museum professional. White received his Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William and Mary in 1998 and his B.A. in history from Christopher Newport University in 1976.

White began his career working with the public and with school children as a teaching musician and costumed interpreter at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He retired in 2016 as the Royce R. & Kathryn M. Baker Vice President of Productions, Publications, and Learning Ventures where he led the Foundation’s education outreach programs including www.history.org, book publishing, audio and video production, the national Teacher Development initiative, the Electronic Field Trip series, as well as interactive resources, lesson plans, and activity kits for K-16 classrooms.

White publishes frequently in journals and magazines. In addition, he wrote and produced the Colonial Williamsburg Primary Sources CD-ROMs for grades 1–3 and grades 4–6 with Pearson Scott Foresman, which won awards from Media and Methods and Technology and Learning magazines. Under his direction the Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trip Series broadcast interactive American history programming to all fifty states and won sixteen regional Emmy Awards. He authored Pearson Scott Foresman’s History-Social Science for California for grades K–5, Pearson’s My World Social Studies for grades K-5, and Colonial Williamsburg’s high school American history digital curriculum, The Idea of America. White is co-author of The Idea of America: How Values Shaped our Republic and Hold the Key to the Future, published in 2013. His newest book, My America: An Owner’s Guide was published in 2017.

Currently, White works as a consultant, author, and teacher. He is an Assistant Professor Adjunct Faculty in the History Department and visiting scholar in residence in American Studies at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.
