Ainsley MacLean, MD

Dr. Ainsley MacLean is Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) and Associate Medical Director for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group I Kaiser Permanente, the largest integrated physician group in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region, and the nation’s leader in health care quality ratings, as measured by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). In her role as CMIO, Dr. MacLean leads a large and talented solution design team of software developers and physician builders. She is accountable for oversight of the electronic medical record and associated care delivery technologies, as well as shaping Information Technology strategy for the medical group and working with national Kaiser Permanente partners in this space.

As Associate Medical Director for Radiology,
together with her leadership team, she oversees the daily performance of this large, complex regional department including 80 diagnostic and interventional radiologists and 500 technologists, performing >800,000 imaging examinations and procedures annually. She holds several technology leadership roles within Kaiser Permanente where she is involved in strategy locally and nationally around the procurement, life cycle replacement, and future investment into imaging, surgical, procedural and monitoring equipment, PACS, and other technologies.

Dr. MacLean is a graduate of Brown University, where she concentrated in the visual arts, and the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, where she received her medical degree. She is co-president of the Brown University Class of 2001, overseeing the team of class officers and volunteers. She also holds a certificate in Leadership and Management from the Wharton School online at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. MacLean completed her residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowship in neuroradiology at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Dr. MacLean is the Principal Investigator for the Kaiser Permanente Study Site of the TMIST Breast Cancer Screening Trial from the National Cancer Institute, and previously the Principal Investigator for the Brevera Breast Biopsy Trial, both conducted at the Kaiser Permanente Kensington Medical Office Building. She is passionate about enhancing the patient care experience, in particular for women undergoing screening mammography, and together with her team implemented a daily service in which 500 screening mammogram results are delivered to patients within 60 minutes of imaging by Kaiser Permanente radiologists, eliminating sleepless nights for tens of thousands of women annually. Dr. MacLean focuses intensively on leadership development and education, and is actively involved in the recruitment, hiring, development and education of her team of radiologists, which hosts annual CME conferences for the larger DMV physician community.

Additionally, Dr. MacLean is past-president of the American College of Radiology’s District of Columbia Chapter, and a current alternate councilor. She was recently elected as a fellow of the American College of Radiology, to be conferred in 2025, a distinction bestowed on just 15% of radiologists in their lifetime. She is on the host committee for the National Women’s History Museum's Women Making History Awards Gala and is a member of NWHM's 1920 Society. Dr. MacLean is absolutely thrilled to be a member of the Board of Directors at such an exciting inflection point for the museum.
